Following its successful launch in June 2015, the M&S Energy Community Energy Fund is enjoying its second year.
The fund, which enables more communities in Great Britain to generate renewable energy and become environmentally and financially sustainable, had up to £350,000 worth of grants available to fund all sorts of community energy groups, from sports clubs to neighbourhood associations.
We had a fantastic response from community groups from all around Great Britain. After the initial 199 applications, 125 projects were shortlisted for the voting phase, during which we received 78,837 votes from the public to select their favourite to win. We were delighted to award grants to 25 projects, 19 projects voted for by the public, as well as 6 winners of the Judges' Prizes. Each one can now use that funding to enable their community energy project to become a reality.
This year we added a new element to the fund and opened up our website as a crowdfunding platform for some community projects to raise additional funds whilst collecting votes to win. Those projects have raised an amazing £28,798 in donations – enough to fund more than two additional community energy projects.
You can meet our 2016 winners and find out about the projects selected by the judges to see who's been successful in your local area.
Congratulations to all the winners! We look forward to following up with each of the community groups as they prepare to install their renewable technologies or energy efficiency measures.

1 M&S Energy will donate £1 per annum to its Green Energy Fund for every M&S Energy account live from 1 April 2016 to 31 March 2017. The Green Energy Fund will run a community energy grant funding competition; it will enable not-for-private-profit community projects in Great Britain to enter a competition with the chance to win funding to install renewable energy technologies and become more environmentally and financially sustainable when compared to not having such renewable energy technology installed. The types of projects are dependent on applications.
