Longer-term investments

Invest in tomorrow - today

In the UK, we waste enough energy each year to power nearly 7 million homes. However if we all make small changes, together we can make a big difference – and help the environment.

So, as you start to see savings from the little changes you make, it’s a good idea to re-invest this money – towards energy saving products and appliances to reduce your energy use even further.

Over time the long-term savings of the following tips will more than pay for the cost of purchasing and installing these measures.

Cavity Wall Insulation

Around a third of the heat lost in an uninsulated house goes through the walls.

  1. Cavity wall insulation helps stop the heat escaping and could save you up to £90 a year on your energy bills. If you live in an older building with solid walls (i.e. no cavities between two layers of brick) it’s not so easy to insulate and you will need to seek advice

Central Heating system

Invest in a new boiler.

  1. Old boilers burn money by letting far too much heat escape into the atmosphere. A new, super-efficient condensing boiler can be about 35% cheaper to run.

Double Glazing

Double glazing cuts heat loss through windows by up to 50% and could cut your heating bills by as much as £140 a year.

  1. If you aren't planning to change your window frames, a good alternative is to fit simple secondary glazing panels – they work like double glazing to trap air and insulate your home, but they're cheaper and you can fit them yourself.

Energy Efficient appliances

Thinking about buying a new appliance?

  1. Buy energy efficient appliances. You should aim to buy electrical appliances rated A or above for energy efficiency. New appliances look great but the real beauty is lower running costs. Your old fridge freezer, for example, could be using two and a half times more electricity to power than a modern A-rated one. That’s why it’s best not to wait for your old machines to break down before you replace them – the older they get the more unreliable and costly they become to run. Visit marksandspencer.com to see our full range of A-rated or above appliances.
