Household gas price changes from March 2010

SSE (Scottish and Southern Energy plc) who supply M&S Energy customers gas and electricity as Southern Electric, SWALEC and Scottish Hydro, have introduced a package of changes in prices for household gas supply.

From 29 March 2010 it will cut unit prices, adjust the ‘fixed’ charge element in bills1 and remove the extra charges levied on its ‘single fuel’ tariffs compared with standard credit tariffs.

The effect of these changes on a typical customer using the industry standard amount of gas (20,500kWh per annum) will be to reduce SSE’s gas bills by: 4% or £30 (standard credit/direct debit); 7% or £56 (single fuel).  As a result, these SSE customers will pay around 5% less for their gas than customers of British Gas.

Alistair Phillips-Davies, Energy Supply Director of SSE, said:

“Energy supply is still a challenging business, with significant upward price pressures which run counter to reductions in wholesale costs, but we believe this is a responsible package of measures which confirms that SSE is one of the country’s most competitive energy suppliers.  We will do everything we can to make sure customers get value for money from energy supply, with energy efficiency and customer service continuing to be top priorities.”

M&S to launch home energy services division

Marks & Spencer (M&S) announces today (15th February 2010) that it is launching a new Home Energy Services division that offers customers a suite of energy efficiency products and services.

Marks & Spencer (M&S) announces today (15th February 2010) that it is launching a new Home Energy Services division that offers customers a suite of energy efficiency products and services.

Building on the success of M&S Energy, which launched just over a year ago and is already servicing over 125,000 homes, M&S will offer home insulation services and will add bespoke energy advice, renewable energy installations (e.g. solar panels) and energy efficient heating solutions over the coming months.

The first new service, M&S Energy Home Insulation, will launch this week, with prices starting from £149* for loft insulation and the same price for cavity wall insulation. Insulation makes homes more energy efficient and reduces carbon dioxide emissions – one of the biggest causes of climate change.

Stephen Langford, Head of M&S Energy, says:
“Marks & Spencer is committed to making it easy and cost effective for our customers to reduce their carbon footprint. Insulating your home saves you money and helps in the fight against climate change, a genuine win-win situation. We’ve launched a service that takes the hassle factor out of home insulation and applies M&S standards of quality, value and customer service. We will select the best installers, deliver the best lead times and customers will pay M&S, not the installer. It will also be a bespoke service and customers will deal with an M&S advisor that will manage the whole journey from enquiry through to installation.”

Major savings for customers
Insulating a home doesn’t just make it more energy efficient – reducing energy consumption can also lead to significant savings.

Insulating a loft without any existing insulation can save the average homeowner £150 a year on heating bills and 800kg in CO2 emissions* – the equivalent of driving from London to Glasgow and back three times. Topping up existing insulation will save £45 a year.

Cavity wall insulation can save the average householder around £115 per year on heating bills and 610kg in CO2 emissions*. If everyone in the UK installs cavity wall insulation, we would cut CO2 emissions by nearly four million tonnes – enough CO2 to fill over 22 million double-decker buses or Wembley stadium 500 times.

How the home insulation service works
Customers call  0800 0 106 106 to register interest and within seven working days their property is assessed free of charge. If a customer chooses to progress, an appointment is booked with an installer and the work is carried out within eight weeks. Installation times vary, but generally are less than half-a-day and the cavity wall insulation is guaranteed for 25 years. Loft insulation lasts indefinitely given the correct conditions.
