Low cost energy saving measures

Low cost energy-saving measures

A small outlay could help you to save even more energy

See how much you save by trying these low cost energy-saving ideas from M&S Energy.

Keep the heat in

  • Stop heat from escaping through the smallest gaps. Fit doors and windows with draught excluder strips and cover letterboxes and keyholes.
  • Get rid of draughts by filling gaps in floorboards, skirting boards and window frames with silicone sealant.
  • Unused chimneys can be sealed and fitted with a grille. This will reduce heat loss while maintaining sufficient ventilation.
  • Foil or reflective panels fitted behind radiators reflect heat back into the room that could otherwise be lost.

Make more water savings

  • Insulate your hot water tank. A jacket costs around £20 and will pay for itself in heat savings in a matter of months.#
  • Cover hot water pipes in insulating material bought for around £1 a metre from a DIY store. Begin with the pipes between your boiler and hot water cylinder.
  • A water-saving showerhead provides a power shower effect and saves on water and energy.

Choose energy-saving products

  • An eco-kettle boils the exact amount of water you need, saving energy and money.
  • A standby reduction device will automatically turn off devices attached to your TV or computer – such as speakers or a scanner – when the main appliance is on standby.
  • Energy-saving light bulbs consume less than 25%# of the energy used by traditional bulbs and last around 10 times longer. Switching could save you around £45# over a bulb's lifetime.
